Understanding CTC and In-Hand Salary: A Complete Guide

When an Indian employer offers a job, the number quoted in the offer letter is almost always the Cost to Company (CTC), not the amount that actually lands in the employee's bank account every month. This gap between CTC and take-home pay confuses most first-time job seekers, and even experienced professionals often struggle to work out exactly where their money goes. This calculator, and the guide below, exist to make that breakdown transparent.

What exactly is CTC?

CTC is the total yearly expense an employer incurs to keep an employee on its payroll. It is an umbrella figure that includes the fixed monthly pay, statutory contributions the company makes on the employee's behalf, and various benefits — some of which the employee never sees as cash. A typical CTC structure is made up of components such as Basic Pay, House Rent Allowance (HRA), Special Allowance, Employer's contribution to Provident Fund (PF), Gratuity, and, in several states, Labour Welfare Fund (LWF) contributions.

Why in-hand salary is lower than CTC

The in-hand or "net" salary is what remains after mandatory deductions are subtracted from the gross monthly pay. The most common deductions are:

Because employer PF contribution, gratuity, and sometimes insurance premiums are part of CTC but never paid out as monthly cash, the in-hand figure can be noticeably lower than CTC divided by twelve.

What is Labour Welfare Fund (LWF)?

LWF is a statutory contribution collected by certain state governments from both employer and employee to finance welfare activities for the labour class — housing, healthcare camps, education assistance, and recreational facilities. The contribution amount and frequency (monthly, half-yearly, or annual) vary by state, and not every state mandates it. Because it is small in absolute terms, it is frequently overlooked in manual salary calculations, which is why this tool factors it in automatically.

How to use this Salary Analyzer

Enter your annual or monthly CTC, choose your state (for accurate Professional Tax and LWF slabs), and select any applicable benefits or deduction preferences. The tool instantly breaks your package down into Basic, HRA, allowances, employer contributions, and statutory deductions, then shows your estimated monthly and annual in-hand salary. You can export the breakdown as an Excel sheet or PDF salary slip, or copy a quick summary to share with family or a recruiter.

A quick note on accuracy

This calculator is designed to give a realistic estimate based on commonly used salary structuring practices in India. Actual figures may vary depending on your specific company's HR policy, applicable state rules, and the tax regime you opt for. For binding financial or tax decisions, please verify the numbers with your HR/payroll team or a qualified chartered accountant.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is CTC the same as my monthly salary?

No. CTC is an annual figure representing the company's total cost, including parts you don't receive as cash monthly (like employer PF and gratuity). Your monthly in-hand salary is always lower than CTC ÷ 12.

Does every state charge Labour Welfare Fund?

No, LWF applicability, contribution amount, and collection frequency differ by state. Some states like Uttar Pradesh and Delhi have no LWF scheme at all, while others collect it monthly or half-yearly.

Why is my employer's PF contribution part of my CTC?

Employers structure CTC to reflect their complete cost of employing you, which includes their own statutory contributions on your behalf, even though that money doesn't appear in your bank account each month.

Can I reduce my tax deduction legally?

Yes, through eligible exemptions and deductions under the old tax regime (like HRA exemption, Section 80C investments, and NPS contributions) or by comparing your tax liability under the new regime. This tool gives an estimate; a tax advisor can help optimise further.

Is my data saved anywhere when I use this calculator?
